IronCAD the Productivity Solution:
Coal Science Research Institute needed to develop a new mining device and they needed CAD software that could meet the challenge. By implementing IronCAD/CAXASOLID they were able to develop an award winning machine, the EBJ-120TP in very little time.

In January 2005, the EBJ-120TP tunnel drilling machine designed by Coal Science Research Institute Tai-Yuan Branch received the 2nd place Chinese National Technology Advance Award. This was the first time Chinese designed coal industry heavy machinery received such an award. The EBJ-120TP machine also received the Chinese Coal Industry Outstanding Science and Technology Award in 2003. The design of this machine was completed using the innovative 3D design software IronCAD/CAXASOLID. The EBJ-120TP machine has approximately 8,200 parts. All parts and assemblies are designed and assembled using IronCAD/CAXASOLID.

Tunnel drilling machines are the main product of Coal Science Research Institute Tai-Yuan Branch (Tai-Yuan Branch). In general, due to the model size and complexity of tunnel drilling machines, and the lacking of advanced design tools, it takes a long design cycle to complete a machine. Typically, it takes 6 months or longer. EBJ-120TP was a new product designed by the Tai-Yuan Branch in 2001. By using IronCAD/CAXASOLID it effectively shortened the design cycle from initial proposal to final design in 3 months. The IronCAD/CAXASOLID product provided 2D to 3D innovative design including completed concept designs, exterior appearance visualizations, as well as part and assembly design.

In May 2002 the EBJ120-TP tunnel drilling machine passed the certification from the Chinese Coal Industry Association, where it confirmed that the machine, among similar products, reached international advanced standards in overall design, suitability and reliability.

Since its passing the certification 150 EBJ-120TP have been ordered or sold. In June 2004, EBJ-120TP reached 15 productions per month. It has been used in more than 10 coal production enterprises. Its market share reached 17% in the tunnel drilling machine market in China. It was the number one selling machine in China in 2003 among similar products and reached 80% market share in the half coal/rock drilling machine market.

For example, PingDing Coal Enterprise bought 25 EBJ-120TP machines and used them in 6 different coal mine sites. Through May 2004 the accumulated drilling distance reached 29,000 meters. That assured a time reduction of 2-3 months in at least five different areas. From statistical data comparing similar machines, the TBJ-120TP machine drills 150 extra meters per month in half coal/rock tunnels. That saves $4,000 - $6,000 in materials, and other consumption of parts and oil saving around $7,000 - $10,000.

IronCAD/CAXASOLID focuses on innovative product design and provides an innovate design platform for customers. It supports conceptual design, overall layout, detail design, engineering design, analysis and simulation, and NC application. It has become a major tool for enterprises to accelerate time to market and to win in the marketplace. It provides parametric design as well as extending drag & drop design methodology into the 3D environment. The application of IronCAD/CAXASOLID in the design of the EBJ-120TP machine has significantly reduced design cycle, raised design quality, and reduced costs. It also helped to create a new design concept and design methodology among the engineers in Tai-Yuan Branch.
