Metal Part Drawings
Sheet metal parts have unique requirements in the area of 2D
drawing creation. In most instances, a drawing view is needed
of an unfolded version of the sheet metal part, as well as a folded
version. In order to achieve unfolded and folded drawing
views from the same scene, and retain those views in the case
of modifications, a simple process is available, which begins
in the scene environment and unfolding the sheet metal part.
To create a 2D drawing of a sheet metal part with unfolded
and folded views:
In the scene, select
the sheet metal part at the part editing level and then select
the Unfold Sheet Metal Part option from the Sheet Metal Fluent
The unfolded part is immediately displayed in the scene.
Select the Look At tool
and click near the center of the base stock of the sheet metal
A straight-on view from the top of the part is displayed.
From the File menu,
select New, Drawing, and then select the Blank Drawing template.
A blank drawing sheet is displayed in the 2D drawing environment.
From the Create menu,
select View and then General or select it on the View Fluent
Select OK on the General
View Creation dialog box.
A drawing of the unfolded view of the sheet metal part is created,
with bend lines displayed. By default, bend line length
is associative to the bend geometry, which provides automatic
update of the bend lines (and Call-outs such as Up/Down, Radius,
and Angle) when the sheet metal part is modified and its view
updated in the view. Manual adjustments to the bend
line length cannot be made when this option is active.
To deactivate this option on the current view only, right-click
on the bend line and deselect the Associative Geometry option
from the pop-up menu. Modifications can then be made
to the bend line length by clicking and dragging an endpoint.
However, if the Associative Geometry option is reactivated
on the line, it will snap back to its associative state.
To deactivate this option on all newly created sheet metal
drawings, deselect the Associative to bend geometry option
on the Bend Line Default Properties dialog.
From the Windows menu,
select the current scene file.
The scene environment is accessed, displaying the unfolded
sheet metal part.
Select the part at the
part editing level and then choose the Refold Sheet Metal
Part option from the Sheet Metal Fluent Ribbon Bar.
The sheet metal part returns to its original folded state,
viewed straight-on from above.
From the Windows menu
select the active drawing file containing the general view
of the unfolded sheet metal part.
You are returned to the drawing environment and the current
drawing with its view of the unfolded part.
From the Create menu,
select View and then Standard.
On the Standard View
Creation dialog box, select the T.F.R. view from the available
options and then select OK.
If a dialog box appears asking if it should resize and rearrange
existing views, select Yes.
The drawing now includes both an unfolded and folded version
of the sheet metal part to which all necessary details can
be added. Any future changes to the 3D sheet metal part
will be reflected in both versions of the 2D drawing.
