Exporting Wavefront OBJ Files

Frame_03.jpg

When you export a part in this format, the Wavefront OBJ Write dialog box is displayed with the following options:

  • End of Line.  Select from the common export options.

  • Group by Materials.  Select this option to combine all surfaces of the same material into a single group.

  • Output  Material File.  Select this option to create an additional file that contains a list of materials.  The file, which has the  same name as the exported part, has a .mtl extension.

    • Write Texture Manifest File.  Select this option to produce a text document or manifest listing the graphic files associated with the exported part.  The name of the manifest file is the same as the name of the part file, except for the  extension .txt.

  • Tessellate If > 6 Vertices.  Select this option to break up into triangles all polygons with more than six edges.  This option is useful for shortening the lines in the ASCII text file.

  • Export Texture Coordinates.  Select this option to display the surface textures on the in the exported file.

You can export color textures or decals, but not both, to a Wavefront OBJ file.  If the part contains a color texture but not a decal, the color texture is exported.  If the part has a decal but no color texture, the decal is exported.  If it has both, the color texture is exported but not the decal.

If you export a decal, it shows up in the material file as expected.  However, the Wavefront OBJ format does not directly support decals.  It’s up to the application that reads the file to interpret the decal properly.
