When I render high res images in the highest quality mode I sometimes get blemishes on the rendered objects as illustrated in the attached picture (please zoom in to see them - they are small). Any suggestions? Thanks!

Mark,
I only see the "scratches" on the left side, I don;t see the others. Are you possibly using a image for mapping that has these "scratches" already in them?

I sometimes get problems with shadows (when they are not ray-traced), but have never seen anything like this

I am not sure but I don't think so because I've had this problem for years with various renderings, and on various computers, with various textures - but have never asked about it. I used to clean them up in Photshop but that's quite time consuming. They are really strange because they seem to occur kind of randomly (but consistently within a specific file - they don't go away).

I still need more ideas for a solution... it may take "profound" understanding of the rendering engine to solve this problem.

Have you set the light's Advanced Shadow properties to "Ray-traced"?

I'll try that, Kevin, but I like the artistic effect of "messy" shadows sometimes. BTW on second thoughts there may be something in what Alex suggested. Perhaps when I have parts intersecting with other parts in a way that's not "clean" the ragged edges can create rogue reflections...
